Invariably, the result of that exercise will be that your WoW installation is set back to a much earlier point in time (in my experience, right around patch 2.0). And then you need to download and reinstall every.single.patch. since then. It's MUCH easier to simply launch all those patches in order, rather than go through the interminable download process.
